Aluminum is the fence Cape Coral builds behind its canals. The open pickets keep the water view your neighbors are entitled to, the powder coat stands up to salt air, and the right panel meets both the city's waterfront rules and Florida's pool barrier rules. A 4-foot aluminum fence typically costs $30 to $45 a foot installed.
The waterfront rule that makes aluminum the default
Cape Coral's land development code protects the view of the water from neighboring lots. In the zone nearest the seawall, along the rear of the lot and the back part of each side line, a fence's solid portion can't be taller than 3 feet. Above 3 feet, the fence must be open mesh with at least 75% visibility, and the whole fence still can't pass 6 feet.
The city counts every component when it works out that 75%: the posts, the rails, the pickets and the connectors. Many aluminum picket panels clear it comfortably, and for taller runs the permit may ask for open-mesh calculations. We choose the panel with that number in mind and prepare the figures if the application needs them.
Built for salt and sun
Aluminum doesn't rust, and a good powder-coated finish resists the chalking and fading that cheap painted metal shows after a couple of summers. Black is the most popular color by a long way, with bronze and white available. Stainless or coated screws and gate hardware matter just as much as the panels; a steel hinge on an aluminum gate will stain and seize within a year this close to the Gulf.
Styles and heights
- Flat top, the clean look most canal homes choose.
- Spear or finial top, a more traditional profile.
- Pool-code panels with narrow picket spacing and rails arranged so a child can't climb them. See our pool fence page for the barrier rules.
- Rackable panels that follow a gentle slope instead of stepping down in stairs.
Most residential aluminum is 4 or 5 feet tall. A 5-foot fence helps with a jumping dog; anything taller near the water still has to meet the openness rule.
Where aluminum works beyond the water
Aluminum also suits side yards where a solid wall would feel boxed in, the gap between a privacy fence and the seawall, and commercial frontages that need to look tidy and stay secure. It pairs well with vinyl: privacy where you want it, open aluminum where the code or the view calls for it.
Aluminum fence prices
| Job | Typical price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Aluminum, 4 ft | $30–$45 per ft | Powder-coated flat-top or spear-top pickets |
| Aluminum, 5 ft | $35–$55 per ft | Taller panels for dogs or a little more security |
| Aluminum pool-code, 4 ft | $35–$55 per ft | Picket spacing and rails set out for Florida's barrier rules |
| Walk gate | $300–$700 each | Single swing gate; vinyl and aluminum toward the top |
| Double drive gate | $700–$1,800 each | Two leaves, roughly 10 to 12 ft across, with a drop rod |
About these prices: These ranges reflect what Southwest Florida installers published for 2026. Picket style, rackable panels on sloped ground and the number of gates move the figure, and the written price after we measure replaces all of it.
